Adding a conservatory to your home is not only great for the aesthetic and financial value of your home, but it also provides you with a naturally lit and practical living space. In order to help you get the most out of this space, GLS has come up with this handy guide to help you put your conservatory to its best use.

Give a reason for your conservatory:

Finding a purpose for your conservatory is important. Without a proper purpose, your conservatory will feel uninspired and non-functional. Some good ideas to consider are:

  •  A dining room.  Ideal for larger family get-togethers, the natural lighting of a conservatory or an orangery is perfect for creating and adding to the dining atmosphere.
  •  Study or office. Natural light and peace and quiet are the perfect combinations for a study, making it a great escape for when you want to lose yourself in a book or you need to focus on an important task.
  •  An extra sitting room. Perfect for when you have a full house, an extra sitting room can be a place to relax and chat without the distractions of TV or technology.

Add flora to bridge the gap between outdoors and indoors

Your conservatory is in most cases a gateway to the outdoors, so adding plant-life to it not only adds a splash of colour but also gives you a sense of bringing the outdoors indoors.

Regulate the temperature & light

One of the main problems with conservatories is their temperature; often they can be scorching hot in the summer months and chilly underfoot in the winter. Installing underfloor heating or low radiators can help keep heat in during colder weather, whilst heat reflective blinds are a useful way to keep things cooler when the sun is beating down.

Lighting can also be an issue; it is possible to have too much of a good thing! If you find yourself being dazzled every time you set foot into your conservatory then investing in blinds is probably your best option. Likewise, they can be useful for giving your conservatory a private and cosy feel in the evenings.
